The Sacramento County Probation Department received the California State Association of Counties (CSAC) Challenge Award for its Break Away Bike Program. Given to recognize inventive and effective programs being implemented by California county governments, Sacramento County’s unique program offers donated bikes as sobriety incentives to participants in the Adult Drug Court program who have unreliable transportation.
“Our main goal is to turn people’s lives around and help them become sober. Dependable transport is essential to our clients’ success,” said Lee Seale, Sacramento County Chief Probation Officer. “They must earn the bike by staying with the program, proving their responsibility, and submitting six consecutive negative drug tests.”
Participants who have revoked or suspended licenses can use the bikes to see their families, get a job or an education, and attend mandatory sobriety program appointments and court appearances. The Break Away Bike Program provides a second chance for both the bikes and participants.
