As you drive by Sacramento County’s Department of Child, Family and Adult Services (DCFAS) offices this month, you’ll notice dozens of blue pinwheels planted outside. The pinwheels are part of a national effort to raise awareness about Child Abuse Prevention, which is observed in April. The pinwheels will remain planted throughout April as part of an effort to continue to raise awareness about preventing child abuse and neglect.
Sacramento County’s DCFAS has a longstanding commitment to raising awareness about child abuse and neglect. DCFAS also encourages community members to raise awareness by planting pinwheels in their own yards or learning the signs of child abuse or neglect.
Here are some things you can do to prevent child abuse and neglect:
- Be a friend to a parent you know, and offer support when needed
- Be a friend to a child you know, show you care about their interests and well-being
- Talk to your neighbors about looking out for one another and the children where you live
- Donate items to families in need to alleviate financial stress
- Volunteer your time and resources for programs supporting children and families in your community
