May is National Foster Care Month and Sacramento County’s
Department of Child, Family and Adult Services (DCFAS) is recognizing the important impact resource families have on the lives of foster youth. If you want to help make a difference in the life of a foster child, DCFAS encourages you to consider becoming a resource parent.
While DCFAS is dedicated to reducing the number of children in foster care and the reunification of families, there are situations where children may need to stay somewhere outside of their homes. Resource families, formerly known as foster parents, care for minors who may require temporary care due to abuse, neglect or other circumstances. Resource families provide love, guidance and a safe place for foster youth to stay until they can either return to their parents or another family member or find a permanent home through adoption.
There is an ongoing need for resource families in Sacramento County and across the United States. While homes are needed for all types of children, there is a particular need for resource families who can accommodate siblings, teens and children with medical needs.
The Sacramento County Resource Family Approval Program offers comprehensive training, support and guidance to these families. You can read more about becoming a resource family by
visiting the DCFAS website.
This National Foster Care Month, join us in recognizing the importance of supporting foster youth, resource families, and everyone who helps make a positive impact in the lives of foster youth.
