After rethinking all the ways you can repurpose items, having a yard sale, and going to your local donation center with your gently used items, are you still overwhelmed with stuff that is no longer useful? Take it to the Kiefer Landfill or North Area Recovery Station – both Sacramento County Department of Waste Management & Recycling (DWMR) facilities are open daily!
The North Area Recovery Station (NARS), located at 4450 Roseville Road in North Highlands, accepts household waste from the public, businesses, and private waste haulers. This facility accepts some recyclable materials, a full range of household hazardous waste, and some hard to handle items. DWMR is investing in improvements that have increased customer safety and traffic efficiency including new scales and scale houses, a new right turn exit onto Roseville Road, and upgraded visitor parking and entrance – including the addition of new flagpoles that host our United States and California flags.
The Kiefer Landfill, located at 12701 Kiefer Blvd., in Sloughhouse, receives household waste from the public, businesses, and private waste haulers and also takes some recyclable material, some household hazardous waste, and hard to handle items.
Both NARS and Kiefer Landfill accept many items free – such as, large and small corded household items (fridges to food processors), small power tools, electronics and bulky items like tires and mattresses/box springs! Learn more about free drop-off items.
Due to state law, SB 1383, DWMR is required to provide residential organics collection of food scraps, food-soiled paper and yard trimmings to keep this material out of landfills. Weekly collection of organics begins July 4, 2022.
To make it easier for customers, the bi-weekly serviced Green Waste cart for yard trimmings will now become your Organics cart for food scraps and food-soiled paper, along with yard trimmings for weekly service.
Doubling the service frequency requires the department to hire and train dozens of staff to drive the additional curbside collection routes and equipment. To conduct the necessary training, DWMR equipment operators have been temporarily reassigned from Bulky Waste Pickup appointments.
Currently, a limited number of Bulky Waste Pickup appointments are available starting mid-July and gradually increasing to a full schedule late this summer 2022.
