The next time you attend a meeting in the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors Chambers, be sure to check out the rotating art on display! Sacramento County sponsors bi-annual art exhibitions in the Board Chambers, located at 700 “H” St. “O Beautiful Land” by Margaret Eldred is on display now through Jan. 25, 2023.
Margaret is strictly a studio painter and works from photographs that she or her family members have taken. She travels around California and the world, looking for interesting crops and trees to photograph. Then she does more research in field guides, botany books and online.
“My title for this exhibit is an invocation to the rice fields, row crops, vineyards, and orchards that give us the food we eat,” said Margaret. “The paintings here celebrate the agricultural bounty of California, specifically focusing on Sacramento County and the southern Sacramento Valley.”
Margaret spent most of her working life as a lecturer in the writing program at UC Davis, specializing in scientific and technical writing and in advanced composition. Since retiring in 2002, she has taken several art studio classes at Sacramento City College as well as private lessons from Philippe Gandiol.
“Without exception, my teachers have challenged me to go beyond what I felt comfortable with and try new things,” said Margaret. “Anything I do well, I owe to them.”
