Showing signs of wear and tear, the water tank along US-50 near Mather Field was due for some maintenance. Originally constructed in 1957 and last painted when the Air Force was still open, the water tank is used to store and supply drinking water for the area. In August, the Department of Water Resources began blasting and painting as well as applying new bright blue letters and logo for Mather Field.
“The maintenance project was a perfect time to visibly commemorate Mather Field for its rich historical and economic contributions to the region,” said Bradley J. Hudson, County Executive. “What better way to honor Mather Field than with a 142 foot tank that is visible to thousands of commuters every day.”
Crawling inside of the tank, the crew blasted off coating and re-sealed it to prevent rust from building up in the future. Crews used four large cranes to help with painting the tank’s exterior.
“Ensuring that the Water Agency customers are provided with safe and clean drinking water is our number one concern,” said Michael Peterson, Director of Water Resources. “We’re happy that in addition to preserving this valuable asset we were able to contribute to the identity of the region.
