Schools, youth groups and non-profit organizations will now have a venue to open the eyes of our future leaders to the importance of stewardship and learning about the environment. On August 22, at 9 a.m., with local officials, business leaders, and the public, the newly renovated Camp Fire Day Camp will officially be recognized for day and overnight camping programs for youth ages 11-18.
Located in River Bend Park on the American River Parkway, the camp has under gone extensive renovation during the past four years with resources for the rehabilitation being provided by a set of partners: Rotary District 5180 Foundation, Save Mart Supermarkets, the American River Parkway Foundation, and Sacramento County Regional Parks.
The gathering will celebrate the tremendous efforts of the Rotary Foundation, in partnership with Save Mart Supermarkets, to create the annual Rotary/Save Mart Supermarket Governor’s Cup Golf Tournament five years ago – which has generated more than $140,000 to renovate the campsite. Additionally, the Foundation and the American River Parkway Foundation have provided almost 6,000 hours of labor for the project.
Joining the effort, the American River Parkway Foundation will provide the Camp’s management and operations. Within the urban core of Sacramento, campers will be able to experience an untouched and pristine environment that exists.
“It’s important to us to give this opportunity to the youth and teens in Sacramento County to experience the outdoors, learn about the American River Parkway and the importance of natural resources within our region,” said Dianna Poggetto, Executive Director, American River Parkway Foundation.
The Sacramento County Regional Parks, going forward, will patrol the facility, preserve the Camp’s natural state and provide its maintenance.
“I’m proud of the County’s involvement in this project. Camp Fire Day Camp has a rich history of teaching young people and families the value of the outdoors and nature, and now that the amphitheater has been restored, that tradition can continue,” said Jeff Leatherman, Regional Parks Director.
Looking to the future, additional renovations that blend with the Camp’s natural surroundings will likely include shower and restroom facilities and an all-weather group gathering structure.
