Animal Control Officer Roy Marcum, who was killed in the line of duty in 2012, was honored with a dedication of a bronze memorial plaque August 29. Members of the community including Animal Shelter staff, members of the Board of Supervisors, county leadership, and animal control officers from cities in the region gathered at the shelter in his honor.
“Today is an important day for our shelter, a day we will remember forever,” stated Dave Dickinson, Animal Shelter Director. “We will remember Roy for his humor, his friendship… his easy going way with people and his compassion for animals.”
County Supervisor Don Nottoli spoke on behalf of his fellow supervisors and stated, “Officer Marcum was dedicated to the people of Sacramento County and to the welfare of the animals within it. And, we commend all of you for your dedication in the work you do for the County.”
Tina Marcum, Roy’s wife, and children, Jackie and Roy Jr., revealed the bronze plaque by removing a black drape. The ceremony was attended by animal control officers from the cities of Sacramento, Citrus Heights, Elk Grove, Folsom, and Rancho Cordova.
“Roy hasn’t been with us for nine months – yesterday – but he will always be a part of this department and his memory will never be forgotten. When you visit, you will see the smile that Roy so eagerly shared with everyone he met and remember why he was your friend,” concluded Dickinson.
The public can view the Marcum Memorial Plaque in the courtyard at the Sacramento County Animal Shelter at 3839 Bradshaw Road, one mile south of Highway 50, Wednesday – Friday 12:30 – 5:30 p.m. and Saturday - Sunday 12 noon – 4:30 p.m.
Officer Marcum will be recognized nationally with the R.D. “Bob” Ward Memorial Posthumous Award from the National Animal Control Association in Atlanta on September 5. Dr. Ward was a Texas pioneer among those striving for professionalism in the Animal Control field and was an outstanding example of the type of person who gives their all for a just cause.
