Sacramento County is celebrating 20 years of National Food Safety Education month by honoring food safety stars in our community. On September 9, in recognition of the month dedicated to “safety first” in America’s kitchens, the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors honored several area businesses for their outstanding food safety records.
The County’s Food Safety Awards are just a part of the Environmental Management Department’s (EMD) nationally recognized food safety program. Sacramento County was the first in nation to issue the green-yellow-red placards during food safety inspections. They have become a model for other programs. Alameda and Butte counties have replicated the color-coded system already. The State of Hawaii recently began their program. In addition, restaurant patrons in Marin, Santa Clara and Sonoma counties will soon see green, yellow and red placards in their favorite restaurants.
Each September, the EMD issues Awards of Excellence certificates to food facilities that had no major violations noted during its last three consecutive health inspections.
EMD selected a food establishment from each supervisorial district to receive their certificate at Tuesday’s Board of Supervisors meeting:
District 1 - Supervisor Serna - The Melting Pot: 814 15th St, Sacramento, CA 95814
District 2 - Supervisor Yee - Elk Grove Unified Food Processing Facility: 8389 Gerber Rd, Sacramento, CA 95828
District 3 - Supervisor Peters - Arcade Fundamental Middle School: 3500 Edison Ave., Sacramento, CA 95821
District 4 - Supervisor MacGlashan - Pizzeria Classico: 702 Sutter St., Folsom, CA 95630
District 5 - Supervisor Nottoli - El Jardin Mexican Restaurant: 9385 Elk Grove Blvd #600, Elk Grove, CA 95624
In 2014, there were 546 facilities that earned a Food Safety Awards of Excellence certificate countywide. EMD’s Environmental Health Division inspects approximately 5,500 restaurants, retail markets, bakeries, bars and schools for food safety compliance annually. Inspections are unannounced and completed up to three times a year.
