The County ($25,000) and City of Sacramento ($25,000), the Sacramento Association of Realtors ($50,000) and United Public Employees ($10,000) announced this morning that they are joining forces to invest another $110,000 into emergency shelter for homeless individuals.
Action has already taken place. Sister Jeanne, Executive Director of
Stanford Settlement opened the doors on Wednesday night to provide shelter to another 25 people who would have been sleeping outside.
Volunteers of America is providing overnight supervision, transportation and food and the County is providing water, blankets and security.
County Supervisor Phil Serna stated, “Recent storms have clearly exacerbated the need for emergency overnight shelter and it is incumbent on all of us to do everything we can to add capacity where possible. The fact that this effort came together swiftly with the generous assistance of so many, shows that when faced with an immediate challenge, our county, city, non-profit and labor communities can thoughtfully and effectively rise to the occasion.”
