First 5 Sacramento is asking for community input to help develop its Strategic Plan for the next three years. Their approach is to conduct a collaborative and inclusive process that is truly community driven. A committee developed the elements of the Plan, from the vision to the goals, and together with community input created a strategic direction for First 5 Sacramento to better serve its children.
The Strategic Plan has specific goals related to health, early care and development, and the empowerment of families and is used to distribute funds. All services to be funded must tie in with the goals and results identified in the Strategic Plan. The upcoming three year period pertains to July 1, 2015 through June 30, 2018.
Funding is based on the number of children born in each county. In Sacramento County there are approximately 20,000 children born each year and First 5 Sacramento currently receives $14 million annually.
To help develop the Plan, First 5 Sacramento is hosting a series of community meetings to gather public input. Community input is vital to the success of First 5 efforts and we encourage you to attend a meeting in your neighborhood.

About First 5 Sacramento:
First 5 Sacramento was formed after voters passed Proposition 10 in 1998, a tobacco tax to fund a range of prevention and early intervention programs. These programs are aimed at improving the health and well-being of children, ages zero through five, and their families to ensure children enter Kindergarten ready to learn. As a result of Prop 10, there is a State agency—First 5 California, and all 58 counties have a local First 5 Commission responsible for the planning, implementation, and evaluation of programs and services.
The First 5 initiative was grounded in a belief that every child deserves the opportunity to succeed in school and throughout adulthood, and is supported by research that has demonstrated:
• More than 90% of the brain develops in the first five years.
• That the first five years of a child’s life are most critical for early childhood development and school readiness.
• Investing in early education is cost-effective with an estimated return of $7 for each dollar invested.
