On July 10, the Elk Grove City Council unanimously adopted an ordinance appointing the Sacramento County Health Officer as the city’s Health Officer. This ordinance formally recognizes the authority of the Sacramento County Health Officer regarding public health matters in the City of Elk Grove.
Sacramento County Public Health and its Health Officer, Dr. Olivia Kasirye, play a vital role in helping to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to live a healthy lifestyle in the community. Throughout Sacramento County and the cities within the county, Dr. Kasirye and Public Health work to raise awareness of critical health issues and disparities, the importance of creating healthy communities, and the prevention of chronic diseases and infectious disease outbreaks.
For Sacramento County and all its cities, the County Health Officer is tasked with looking at the issues that can threaten the health and wellbeing of children, families and communities, in which Public Health provides a number of programs, services, investigation and monitoring to the entire community. Additionally, the County Health Officer has the authority in the County and its cities to enforce orders related to public health, as well as preventative measures to protect residents from health hazards during local and state emergencies.
“This is an important step for the city of Elk Grove and I’m very pleased with the outcome of the ordinance,” said Sacramento County Public Health Officer Dr. Olivia Kasirye. “I look forward to continuing to foster strong relationships within the city of Elk Grove to improve the health and resiliency of all residents.”
Nick Mori, Sacramento County Public Health Program Planner will also support Elk Grove by working as the designated liaison, responding to Elk Grove’s public health-related inquiries to divert a potential crisis.
California Health and Safety Code Section 101460 requires cities to appoint a health officer, except when the city has made other arrangements for the county to exercise the same powers and duties within the city, as are conferred upon city health officers by law. Public Health is working to assist with the designation with all cities in Sacramento County.
