Discovery Park will hold a “Grand Re-Opening” celebration from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., Friday, June 30. The 302-acre park had a limited re-opening on May 27, but portions of the park were still closed due to extensive storm damage and high river flows.
The event will also feature the “Life Looks Good On You” and “Kids Don’t Float” river safety campaigns encouraging kids and adults to wear life vests any time they access public waterways. Life jacket borrowing stations for adults and children are available at Discovery Park and other locations along the American River Parkway.
As part of the “Life Looks Good On You” river safety campaign kickoff, entry fees during the event are FREE for those who post a selfie wearing a life vest with the hashtag #SacRivers on Twitter and Instagram. Life vests will be available at borrowing stations and photo booths.
In addition, Regional Parks will symbolize the life-saving impact life jackets have in public waterways with a display of 30 life vests suspended from the Jibboom Street Bridge.
The celebration will include food trucks, local radio stations and bounce houses for the kids.
Public waterway users should be aware that rivers continue to run cold and fast, and underwater hazards make the rivers dangerous, even for strong swimmers. Life vest borrowing stations are located throughout Sacramento’s public waterways, and it’s also the law for children under 13 to wear a life jacket when accessing public waters.
