The Center for Active Design named Sacramento County and Design 4 Active Sacramento (D4AS) as one of twelve worldwide winners in its annual Excellence awards held on September 19, 2016. The Center for Active Design called for submissions that exemplified creativity in projects that embraced the built environment that promoted health.
Design 4 Active Sacramento is an expert team located within the non-profit WALKSacramento. D4AS is made up of health, planning, transportation and architecture professionals who are being recognized for their work to promote community health and livability in the design of Sacramento County’s buildings, streets and neighborhoods. The group authored new language, an appendix document, and an Active Design icon included in the County’s Zoning Code and Design Guidelines that encourages activity while promoting physical and mental health. The Active Design icon makes health-promoting strategies easy to spot and use in the Design Guidelines.
Creating and providing healthy and sustainable communities are key priorities in designing and building neighborhoods in Sacramento County, and the new guidelines will facilitate achieving this goal.
