With strong winds and heavy rains hitting the Sacramento region Jan. 10, County staff and partners began the day offering shelter information for homeless individuals caught in the storm.
On his drive in to work, Sacramento County Supervisor Phil Serna noticed a large homeless population along the American River Parkway near I-5 and Garden Highway. He quickly called County social service providers in to offer assistance.
Service providers from the County’s Department of Human Assistance, along with navigators from Sacramento Steps Forward and Sacramento City Police, offered two-day motel vouchers and other shelter information to the individuals along the Parkway.
People who accepted the vouchers were transported to the motels by County and Sacramento Steps Forward staff. Those who declined motel vouchers were given information about other social services available to them.
