August was proclaimed National Child Support Awareness Month in 1995. The original proclamation stated, “Providing for our children is one of humanity’s worthiest and most fundamental endeavors. Children are the best part of ourselves – the sum of our past and the promise of our future, the guarantee that our lives and values and dreams will flourish long after we are gone. Sadly, however, many parents in our country today deny the instinct to care for their children, failing to provide even the most basic economic support. . . . Millions do not receive the financial support they need to lead secure and healthy lives.”
We celebrate Child Support Awareness Month in Sacramento County as proclaimed by the Board of Supervisors on July 26, 2016. The
Department of Child Support Services celebrates and recognizes parents who work diligently to support their children in every way.
The theme for 2016 is: “Your support shapes their future.” A parent’s support (financial, emotional, physical, and mental) shapes a child’s future by providing the essentials to help them succeed. Children grow and thrive with the commitment of their parents who provide for their needs and teach them by being a good role model.
Child Support Services helped more than 77,000 families and collected more than $116 million in child support for those families in the last federal fiscal year. While focusing on obtaining the financial and medical support a child needs, staff encourages parents to consider how all types of support from a parent will shape their child’s future. “Your children will become what you are; so be what you want them to be.” – David Bly
