Applications are now being accepted for the District Attorney’s 2ndAnnual Youth Academy, a program in partnership with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department, Sacramento Police Department, Rancho Cordova Police Department, and Sacramento County Probation Department.
Students will actively learn about the criminal justice system, hear from criminal justice partners, and engage in open communication between law enforcement and themselves concerning issues that affect youth today.
“The Youth Academy is another opportunity for us to increase understanding and improve relationships between youth and members of the criminal justice system,” said District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert. “It also encourages students to become a part of the system by exploring the various career opportunities within the public safety field.”
Topics include: anatomy of a criminal case, race as a factor in the criminal justice system, use of force, gun violence, gangs, dating violence, human trafficking, marijuana, crime scene investigation and evidence, and distracted driving. A career fair will be held at graduation.
Classes will be held twice a month in the evenings from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at THREE locations:
- SOUTH AREA - Thursdays from September 29, 2016 through April 6, 2017 at the Sacramento Police Department Headquarters - 5770 Freeport Blvd., Sacramento CA 95822.
- NORTH AREA - Tuesdays from October 4, 2016 through March 21, 2017 at the Sacramento Police Officers Association - 550 Bercut Dr., Sacramento CA 95811.
- EAST AREA - Wednesdays from October 5, 2016 through March 29, 2017 at the Rancho Cordova Police Department - 2897 Kilgore Road., Rancho Cordova CA 95670.
*An optional one day field trip is scheduled to tour the Sacramento Superior Court
The program is open to current Sacramento County high school students (incoming 10th through 12th graders). Eligible students can apply for either the South, North, or East Area academy. They must submit a completed application, which can be downloaded at
www.sacda.org.
The deadline to apply is September 16, 2016
The Youth Academy is one of several District Attorney youth programs designed to increase understanding and engage students in a positive relationship with members of the criminal justice system.
