This year marks the 35th anniversary of the Gifts from the Heart program, an initiative that has touched the lives of thousands in Sacramento County. Organized by the Department of Child, Family and Adult Services, this program relies on the generosity of volunteers and donors. A Sacramento County Child Protective Services worker started the program in 1988 to bring holiday cheer to the children she served. Over the years, the program has evolved to include thousands of clients served by the Department of Child, Family and Adult Services.
“This is the 35th year of Gifts from the Heart and we are hoping to make it the best ever for the children, seniors, and disabled adults that we serve. We couldn't do it without our amazing sponsors and volunteers," says Tonja Edelman, who leads the program each year.
Those interested in volunteering this year can sign up to deliver gifts or assist in the warehouse on the
DCFA's website. Volunteers need to sign up by the end of October.
Volunteers can work at the warehouse Monday – Friday from November 28 – December 14. Volunteers will start delivering gifts on November 28.
As Sacramento County grows each year, so does the need for gifts. While Gifts from the Heart is off to a promising start, there is an ongoing need for sponsors for Santa Shop gifts, which benefits children and teens entering Child Protective Services around the holidays. Whether you are a first-time volunteer or sponsor, or you've been contributing for decades, please consider joining this longstanding tradition.
