​Goodbye to Single-use Plastic Bags

On November 8, 2016, California voters approved Proposition 67, the statewide Single-Use Carryout Bag Ban.

The state law overrides Sacramento County’s law. The state law is similar to the County’s ordinance which prohibits most grocery stores, retail stores with a pharmacy, convenience stores, food marts, and liquor stores from providing single-use plastic carry-out bags to their customers.

Instead, these stores may sell a reusable grocery bag or recycled paper bag to a customer at the point of sale at a charge of at least 10 cents. Please note the 10 cents is collected and kept by the stores and is not paid to the County.

Sacramento County and Single-use Plastic Bag

The Sacramento County Board of Supervisors adopted the Single-use Carryout Bag Ordinance on April 26, 2016. Starting July 1, 2016, single-use plastic bags will no longer be provided by many businesses in unincorporated Sacramento County.
