Wondering what to do with your tree once the holidays are over? Don’t throw away your tree – recycle it for free!
Christmas trees can be re-purposed either by being chipped for mulch or used as biofuel. Keep your tree out of the landfill by bringing them to one of six designated locations for recycling.
All trees to be recycled should be free of flocking, tinsel, decorations, nails and stands. Drop off locations will be accepting up to five trees per car or truckload.
Flocked trees will be accepted, but will be treated as garbage and sent to the landfill.
The annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program is a partnership between Sacramento County, the cities of Sacramento and Folsom, and the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD).
If you cannot make the dates below, you can recycle your tree by cutting it up and placing it in your curbside green waste cart. Please make sure the lid will close. It will be emptied on your regular green waste collection day.
