The Great California Shakeout will hit this Thursday, Oct. 15 at 10:15 a.m. Sacramento County will take part in this annual statewide drill designed to remind residents to prepare for potential disasters. The Great Shakeout focuses on a statewide catastrophic earthquake affecting California residents, but Sacramento County urges all residents and businesses in our area to use this opportunity to prepare for the many hazards that threaten our community.
Our area has dealt with recent natural disasters, like floods, that ravaged our community, and we currently see the danger posed by wildfire and grassland fires throughout the state. To stay one step ahead and protect you and your loved ones, you are encouraged to sign up for Sacramento Alert, the County’s mass notification system. Sacramento Alert will send you a critical early warning phone call notifying you of any required actions, such as evacuating homes or sheltering in place, during an emergency. Sacramento County and city partners rely heavily on this communication tool to warn you of potential hazards and the actions you and your family can take to remain safe.
This Thursday, Sacramento, Yolo and Placer County residents who have signed up for Sacramento Alert will receive a call testing the Sacramento Alert system. The drill will replicate a large-scale, multi-jurisdictional emergency that requires calling thousands of phone numbers simultaneously across the Sacramento tri-county region. This is the third year all three counties will test the system. It will include seven participating cities, as well as Sacramento County’s unincorporated areas. For this drill to be successful, residents and businesses are highly encouraged to sign up and take part in this annual test.
The test does not last long. To take part, residents who have not done so in the past can register for Sacramento Alert through the
County website or by visiting the
Sacramento Alert website. Registrations of cell phone and alternate numbers dramatically increase the ability to reach the greatest number of community members within minutes. Join the Great California Shakeout and prepare yourself by signing up for Sacramento Alert today.
