Each September, National Recovery Month is held to educate people about how substance use and mental health services can enable individuals and their families to live healthy and rewarding lives. This observance celebrates the millions of people in recovery from mental health and substance use issues. All month long,
Sacramento County Substance Use Prevention and Treatment Services celebrates the fact that prevention works, treatment is effective, and people can and do recover.
“Recovery Month works to promote and support new evidence-based treatment and recovery practices, the emergence of a strong and proud recovery community, and the dedication of service providers and community members across the nation who make recovery in all its forms possible,” said Ryan Quist, Ph.D., Behavioral Health Director, Division on Behavioral Health Services. “This Recovery Month, let's celebrate the 23 million Americans recovering from substance use, misuse and addiction and pave the way for the 20 million still struggling to seek help. Their lives and voices matter.”
Each year, Recovery Month selects a new focus and theme to spread the message and share the successes of treatment and recovery. The 2020 Recovery Month observance will work to inspire people across the country to recognize the strength and resilience of individuals living in recovery as well as to support those with substance use disorders or co-occurring disorders to consider seeking treatment.
The theme for 2020 National Recovery Month is: “Join the Voices for Recovery: Celebrating Connections and community members across.”

In response to COVID-19, social distancing can have a significant impact on people in recovery from addiction. This population living with substance use disorder is particularly vulnerable to the negative effects that come with self-isolation and social distancing. So that people in recovery can still access critical recovery support groups, Sacramento County Substance Use Prevention and Treatment Services has compiled a short list of virtual resources below.
Sacramento County also provides various alcohol and drug treatment services that range from outpatient treatment, medication-assisted treatment (MAT), residential treatment, detoxification and perinatal services.
