Streets near Anna Kirchgater Elementary School will be improved by the Sacramento County Department of Transportation (SACDOT). Funding for the project is from the State and Federal Safe Routes to School (SRTS) programs, which promote the health and safety of students by financing the construction of street improvements surrounding local schools.
Anna Kirchgater Elementary School is located on the northeast corner of Power Inn Road and Stevenson Avenue. Although the school has existing sidewalks, there are no connecting sidewalks for nearby residential neighborhoods. The grant funding for the project will provide more than 1,300 feet of new connecting sidewalks along the north side of Stevenson Avenue, between the school and existing sidewalks at Marjon Way. Project work will include new sidewalks, curbs, gutters and ADA improvements.
“The funds we receive from Safe Routes to School programs allows us to develop projects to enhance Sacramento County roadways, while improving safety for pedestrians and school children,” said Mike Penrose, SACDOT Director. “For Anna Kirchgater Elementary, the lack of connecting sidewalks presents safety concerns that will be reduced with construction of this project. When completed, it will be much safer for pedestrians to walk in this area, especially school children and their parents.”
The estimated construction cost is $386,000, financed by Federal Safe Routes to School program funding and Measure A Tax Sales revenues. Construction will be completed in 2015.
