There’s more to running a restaurant or food facility than cooking delicious meals. “Safety first” must be a daily practice for all food-related businesses. On September 10, in recognition of National Food Safety Education Month, the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors honored several area businesses for their outstanding food safety records.
One of the winners, Wenelli’s Pizza, serves old-fashioned pizza in the Arden-Arcade area. Co-owners Shelly Tyler and Wendy Williams, best friends for 30 years, founded the restaurant more than 20 years ago.
“We do all of our safety training in-house,” said Shelly Tyler, “so we’re very proud to receive this award for our restaurant and our employees.”
Each September, the County’s Environmental Management Department (EMD) issues Awards of Excellence certificates to food facilities that had no major violations noted during its last three consecutive health inspections.
EMD selected a food establishment from each supervisorial district to receive their certificate at Tuesday’s Board of Supervisors meeting (view winners):

EMD’s Environmental Health Division inspects approximately 5,500 restaurants, retail markets, bakeries, bars, and schools for food safety compliance annually. Inspections are unannounced and completed up to three times a year. Here is the complete list of Awards of Excellence.
