Bradshaw Animal Shelter staff, volunteers and members of the community donated 25 life-transforming pints of blood last month at a blood drive organized by a shelter employee. Six of the 25 pints were from first-time donors.
David Verdugo, an Animal Care Attendant at the shelter, organized the blood drive along with Vitalant (formerly Blood Source) to honor his late father. Along with his brother Jeremey, Verdugo also prepared meals for donors, staff and volunteers at the event.
Vitalant, one of the nation’s oldest and largest nonprofit community blood service providers, donated one pound of pet food for every pint of blood donated during the drive.
The Bradshaw Animal Shelter plans to host more blood drives in the future to support the lifesaving mission of Vitalant.
If you are interested in becoming a blood donor, check for information on the next blood drive at Bradshaw Animal shelter by visiting the
Vitalant website for local events.
If you are unable to donate blood or would like to help animals in need, there are several ways to do so:
- Adoption is a great way to give a shelter pet another life. You can adopt a pet from the Bradshaw Animal Shelter at 3839 Bradshaw Road or through our Petco Adoption Center location at 8840 Madison Avenue.
- The shelter’s foster program is another way to get involved by providing a temporary home for a pet that may need time and care away from the shelter. Becoming a foster care provider is free, and basic supplies and medical needs are provided by the shelter. Those interested in fostering are welcome to join the next foster orientation on Sunday, June 9 (1-3pm) at the Bradshaw Animal Shelter.
