The Department of Animal Care and Regulation is in line to receive an additional $152,000 to its 2013/2014 budget. The Board of Supervisors allocated more funds which will help to increase the shelter’s live release rate, allow animal control officers more time in the field, and enhance the rescue and foster care programs.
“The Shelter staff and volunteers have done an extraordinary job weathering the last few years of reductions and it’s time we re-invest in their operation and get them the extra help they need,” said County Executive Bradley J. Hudson.
With a portion of the additional funds, the Shelter plans to hire a new Animal Care Attendant, or ACA, who will be responsible for caring and evaluating animals, and contributing to adoption efforts. The new position will also help with rescue and foster programs and ensuring that animals are adopted into suitable homes.
“With this additional position we can increase our live release rate by enhancing our existing rescue and foster programs,” Dave Dickinson, Director of the Department of Animal Care and Regulation, said. “We simply want to get more animals out alive.”
The additional kennel help will allow animal control officers to spend more time in the field instead of working in the kennels. The officers are freed up to respond to calls about bites, strays or reported abuse complaints.
Sacramento County Animal Care is located at 3839 Bradshaw Road, Sacramento, CA 95827. The shelter is open Wednesday through Friday, from 12:30-5:30 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, 12:00-4:30 p.m.
