With the summer construction season underway for the
Sacramento County Department of Transportation (SACDOT), you can expect to see crews out on the roads, and sometimes in the trees, working to fix or maintain thousands of miles of roadway within the unincorporated areas of Sacramento County.
Part of this road maintenance to improve the public travel-ways involves protecting and maintaining the vegetation along the right-of-ways for driver and pedestrian safety. The
SACDOT Tree and Landscape division is responsible for maintaining County-owned roadway frontages, medians, pedestrian walkways, soundwalls, bike lanes, and overpasses.
The SACDOT crews create aesthetically pleasing landscaped areas while also providing a safer environment by removing hazardous limbs and dead vegetation. This summertime maintenance work also helps reduce the potential for storm related problems when the rain and high wind season hits. Of course, these Tree and Landscape crews are out later in the year to tackle storm-related emergencies, as well.
The Tree and Landscape crews also focus on removing encroachment violations in Sacramento County. This includes trees and shrubbery growing upon private property that are lower than 13.5 feet over the roadway or obstructing the visibility of an intersection or a traffic control device, such as a stop sign. When these issues occur, the SACDOT Right-of-Way Management section works with property owners to correct violations. SACDOT contracts some of the work to ensure the maintenance is completed in a timely fashion.
If you’re out and notice vegetation issues on or near right-of-ways in the unincorporated areas of Sacramento County, the public is encouraged to contact SACDOT by calling 311 or reporting issues online at
