Sacramento County endeavors to deliver streamlined government services by implementing initiatives that encourage open data and collaboration, while enhancing cybersecurity and best practices. The Center for Digital Government’s 2018 Digital Counties Survey acknowledged these efforts by awarding Sacramento County with a fifth place ranking among U.S. counties for deploying innovative technology practices.

Rami Zakaria, Sacramento County Chief Information Officer and Director of the Department of Technology, said, “Our use of technology is constantly evolving to create cost efficiencies that support Sacramento County goals, strengthens our information security, encourages transparency and engages citizens to make life better for all residents and businesses. We are thrilled to be recognized in the top 10 of the Digital Counties Survey once again.”

The Digital Counties Survey evaluates and pinpoints emerging best technology practices that protect and better informs citizens in counties across the U.S. and are based on the following key characteristics:

  • Open: Transparency / Open Data / Data Governance 
  • Citizen-centric: Government Experience (Mobile, Engaged, Digital Services)
  • Collaborative: Shared Services / Collaboration Initiatives
  • Secure: Cybersecurity Measures / Initiatives
  • Staffed/Supported: Hiring and Retaining Competent IT Personnel
  • Connected: Broadband / Wireless Infrastructure
  • Efficient: Data-driven; Budget / Cost Control 
  • Resilient: Disaster Recovery / Continuity of Operations
  • Innovative: Innovative Initiatives and New Technologies
  • Best Practices

In the survey, Sacramento County's technology efforts were highlighted, ​including: efficiencies to reduce cost such as our paperless initiative; increasing civic engagement through mobile-friendly websites and apps; updating the County’s most critical information systems; the implementation of adaptive, multi-layered cyber security measures and continuity of operations; improving access to County services and data; and, collaboration of regional IT partnerships.
