Pet lovers couldn’t imagine life without their family pets. But, just like humans, pets have routine medical needs and sometimes they get sick or hurt – all of which can take an unexpected chunk out of a paycheck. That’s why the Sacramento County Bradshaw Animal Shelter brought its mobile outreach trailer to south Sacramento earlier this month.

At the Sacramento Neighborhood Animal Assistance Program (S.N.A.A.P.) event, the Bradshaw Shelter staff and its dedicated volunteers, along with the Sacramento SPCA and City of Sacramento’s Front Street Shelter, provided resources for pets free of charge. Events like this are made possible through a grant and focus on specific areas of the County where a disproportionate number of animals end up coming to the animal shelters or that have limited access to veterinarian care.

Hundreds of pet owners braved the heat and lines to receive free wellness vaccines, flea prevention, medical exams and treatment for minor conditions, pet food, supplies, microchips, engraved ID tags, collars, and information on low or no cost spay/neuter surgeries and behavior training. In all, 217 dogs and 44 cats were helped in five hours!

“It’s important pet owners know there are low cost and no cost resources available to help keep their pets healthy, at home, and happy with vaccinations, microchip ID tags, and spay and neuter surgeries – which is the single best way to prevent unplanned litters and animal overpopulation in shelters,” said Dave Dickinson, Sacramento County Bradshaw Animal Shelter director.

Want to help?

For events like this, donated items such as dog/cat beds, collars, wet and dry food, leashes, litter boxes and toys are in need and always appreciated! However, there are other opportunities to help – each of our local animal shelters love volunteers and pet foster providers. Find out more.
