As part of the César E. Chávez Day of Service, the Sacramento Probation Department and the Sacramento Kings Foundation will collaborate to create a volunteer event at the Sacramento County Youth Detention Facility (YDF) on March 31, 2017. The event will involve over 100 volunteers and staff from the Sacramento Kings and the Northern California Construction Training (NCCT) program. The event is part of an effort to transform the holiday into a national day of service.

During the event, the Sacramento Kings will host a basketball clinic, scrimmage games and career development workshops for youth in the YDF. Volunteers will also work on sketching and painting murals inside the YDF.

The NCCT and volunteers will be working on outdoor projects including building new raised planter boxes and picnic tables for the YDF garden.

“The partnership with the Sacramento Kings, NCCT and the 100+ volunteers converging on the Youth Detention Facility on César Chávez Day is truly amazing and reinforces for the kids in the facility that their community really cares about them and supports their effort to change behavior,” Chief Deputy Brian Lee says of the event.

César E. Chávez Day of Service is celebrated in many parts of the United States and observed every year on March 31. The celebration serves as a tribute to César’s commitment to social justice and respect for human dignity.

For more information about the event, contact Assistant Chief Deputy Carol Paris at ParisC@SacCounty.Net or 916-875-0324.
