Last December, the College Glen Little League reached out for help with construction on new player dugouts and scorer’s booths at their fields from an unlikely source: the Sacramento County Probation Department.

The call was made due to the partnership between Probation and Northern California Construction Training (NCCT). The NCCT is a non-profit, community-based organization that enrolls individuals in programs in order to prepare them for careers in construction.

Crews made up of NCCT program participants sprang into action and have been on site daily since mid-January to complete the dugouts and booths.

“This has been a godsend for us,” said Steve Wirtz, Association President of the College Glen Little League.

So far, NCCT students have assembled three new scorer’s booths, which was just in time for Opening Day on March 12.

“Everyone wins on projects like this,” said Chief Probation Officer Lee Seale. “The project was a great learning opportunity for the students in the NCCT program, and the students can also take pride in the work they did for the College Glen community. It goes to the heart of Probation’s mission, which is to support positive change.”

Participants referred to the NCCT program by the Probation Department are provided with vocational, educational and employment services. The organization works with 22 local labor unions for training and employment and has a 92% job placement rate for graduates.

The partnership also includes the Sacramento County Office of Education to provide GED and classroom instruction to clients.
