The Mattress Recycling Program, in coordination with Bye Bye Mattress, ensures that mattresses and box springs are picked up by a dedicated recycler and used to make new products. More than 80 percent of a mattress can be recycled, according to the Mattress Recycling Council. Foam, fiber, and other soft commodities are compressed and used to make mattress pads and animal bedding. Metal coils are removed and sold to metal recyclers. The wood can be recycled or used as a fuel source.
“The mattress recycling program underscores our commitment to the community by going the extra mile to divert material from landfill disposal,” said Doug Sloan, Director, DWMR. “We especially thank our dedicated employees for handling this bulky material. The average mattress weighs 50 pounds!”
Since the free drop off program began in December 2015, the County has diverted more than 125,000 mattresses from landfill disposal, which amounts to more than 6.5 million pounds!
