This year, Earth Day turns 50 on April 22! Even with many of us working and learning from home, protecting our environment is still an important part of being healthy.
Use #WhyISavethePlanet when sharing Earth Day posts to show others what inspires you to protect the Earth – including your children and favorite places in nature.
To help celebrate Earth Day, we have a couple of fun and social distancing compliant project ideas as well as some helpful reminders.
Build a compost pile or worm box! Composting grass clippings, pruning, leaves and leftover food scraps keeps valuable materials from otherwise ending up in the landfill. Make your own soil amendment to use in your garden.
Visit the Waste Management and Recycling website for information and resources on backyard composting and composting with worms.
Make an art project. Look for things around the house that you might toss in the recycling or garbage cart to create a piece of “recycled art.” Use things like plastic bottles, paper or Styrofoam egg cartons, yarn, boxes, glass jars, bottle corks and cardboard, to make a car, plane, spaceship, animal, you name it! Have fun being creative!
Recycle Right. Please put plastic containers 1 through 7 (excluding Styrofoam) empty and dry in your curbside recycling cart along with paper products like junk mail and cardboard, glass and metal containers – like soup cans. Did you know that the SacGreenTeam mobile app has a “How do I get rid of…” feature that allows you to search a database of hundreds of household items and the proper way to dispose of them? If you do not already have it, download it now for free in the
Apple App Store or the
Google Play Store. This feature is also available on the Waste Management website,
embedded within the collection calendar feature.
No bags. The current
Public Health Order prohibits bringing reusable bags for shopping. You can purchase new reusable bags inside most grocery stores or you can opt for no bags. Please reuse bags at home, if possible. Place in the garbage cart when no longer usable.
Please remember. During this stay-at-home time, please do not visit Kiefer Landfill or the North Area Recovery Station unless it is necessary. Help us reduce our employee’s exposure, and your own, by complying with the order. Please consider whether your planned trip to these facilities qualifies as essential. When possible, stay home – and stay healthy. If you have bulky items or a large load to dispose of, it is easy to schedule a bulky waste
pick up online or by calling customer service at 916-875-5555, Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Even when we are apart, we can all work together to protect our health and our environment.
Happy birthday, Earth Day!
