Want to earn money and help the election process? The Department of Voter Registration and Elections is looking for election officers to work in the polling stations for this June’s election.

“We still need close to 300 election officers as we prepare for this election,” said Jill LaVine, Director of Voter Registration and Elections.  “It is a great way to earn money and give back to the community as well.”

Each polling location must have an Inspector and three to five Clerks.  The Inspectors are in charge of the polling places and check election supplies prior to the election day, assign duties, and return ballots and supplies to the assigned drop-off site on election night. Clerks are responsible for preparing, opening, maintaining and closing the polling place on Election Day. All election officers are encouraged to attend a short three-hour training class that is offered in multiple locations.

The County recruits officers by calling past workers, and those who have expressed an interest in working Election Day.  Many Inspectors have their friends and family work the polls with them and make it a fun experience.

Election officers can expect to make $125 as a Clerk, and $175 as an Inspector. Bilingual election officers receive an additional $10.  County employees can work the polls on Election Day without having to take a vacation day with their supervisor’s approval and State employees have a similar opportunity. Students can get community service hours and earn money at the same time.

In addition to recruiting and training poll workers, the County is busy making sure the manuals and all necessary forms are printed, equipment has been tested and proper supplies are set to be dropped off at the appropriate polling locations.

For more information about becoming an Election Officer, visit the Voter Registration and Elections website and apply online, or call, 916-875-6100.
