Sacramento County was named the number one Government Green Fleet in North America for 2018 by 100 Best FleetsTM. The Government Green Fleet Award, which is open to all Federal, State and Local Government Fleets in North America, evaluates nominees based on the following categories: Fleet composition, fuel and emissions, policy and planning, fleet utilization, education, executive and employee involvement, and supporting programs.

The County has long embraced clean air initiatives and has acted in many capacities to reduce dependence on foreign oil and use resources wisely. This commitment to fleet sustainability began in 1999 with the adoption of the County’s Heavy Duty Low Emission Vehicle Acquisition Policy.

By the end of 2016, Sacramento County migrated 61% of the fleet’s total fuel consumption to alternative, renewable or advanced technology which includes the use of nearly 500 high miles per gallon hybrids. “The County’s fleet vehicles consume over 3 million gallons of fuel each year,” said Keith Leech Chief, Fleet Services Division and Parking Enterprise. “By converting more than 60 percent of them to run on renewable fuels and advanced technology, we have reduced our carbon footprint by nearly half while achieving significant ongoing savings in fuel costs.

“Sacramento County’s ‘Green Fleet’ achievements are a direct result of employing multiple strategies to reduce petroleum consumption and emissions while being fiscally responsible.”

Sacramento County Department of Waste Management and Recycling (DWMR) began transitioning to natural gas refuse trucks nearly 20 years ago. In 2015, The County opened the first combination time/fast fill Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) station in the region. Today, all of the Heavy Waste Management Fleet run on “Renewable” Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and CNG and the first fully electric collection trucks will be in service before the end of 2018. These efforts displace over 500,000 gallons of petroleum diesel consumption and the associated emissions each year.
