As Valentine’s Day approaches, Sacramento County’s Gifts from the Heart (GFTH) program is inviting you to help older adults in our community. The GFTH program began in the 80’s to help foster youth during the holiday season. Since then, it has expanded to a year-round program that provides essentials to foster youth, disabled adults and older adults who are served by Sacramento County’s Department of Child, Family and Adult Services (DCFAS).

This Valentine’s Day, community members have a meaningful opportunity to show extra care by donating household essentials that make daily life safer, healthier and more comfortable. Items especially needed include:

  • Throw blankets — to help keep older adults warm and cozy.
  • Hand towels and washcloths — practical items that are always in demand.
  • Cleaning supplies — from gentle cleaners to wipes and disinfectants.
  • Warm socks — an often-overlooked essential for comfort and circulation.
  • Heating pads – to help keep people warm and help with aches and pains.
  • Box fans - can be especially helpful in warmer weather or for improving air circulation in small living spaces.

*Please note that all items must be new and not wrapped in gift packaging.

You can also find an ongoing Amazon registry online.

Gifts can also be shipped to the Gifts from the Heart warehouse at 8520 Younger Creek, Sacramento CA, 95828.

Why Your Support Matters

The GFTH program relies on the generosity of local individuals, businesses and community partners to carry out its mission. All the adults you purchase a gift for this Valentine’s are either clients of Adult Protective Services or In-Home Supportive Services. Many of the adults served by these programs lived on a fixed income or face health challenges.  A small donation of everyday essentials can make a big difference in someone’s quality of life.

For more information about donating items or making a financial contribution, contact the Gifts from the Heart team via email at GFTH@saccounty.gov or by phone at (916) 875-2027.
