Sacramento County Regional Parks, in partnership with the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District and the City of Sacramento Fire Department, will conduct a series of prescribed burns throughout June as part of its ongoing fire risk reduction efforts.

The controlled burns are designed to reduce wildfire risk, improve ecosystem health and provide valuable training opportunities for fire personnel. Burn operations will be conducted under carefully monitored conditions to ensure public safety and minimize impacts to surrounding communities.

Planned burn locations and anticipated dates include:

  • Woodlake Area of the American River Parkway — June 7–9
  • Dry Creek Parkway — One-day operation, anticipated to begin as early as June 11
  • Illa M. Collin Preserve — One-day operation, anticipated to begin as early as June 17
  • Gene Andal Park — Two-to-three-day operation, anticipated to begin as early as June 22

Dates and times are subject to change based on weather conditions, air quality and operational considerations.

"Prescribed fire is an important tool that helps us reduce hazardous vegetation, protect nearby communities, and maintain healthier park ecosystems," said Liz Bellas, Regional Parks Director. "These projects also provide valuable training opportunities for our local fire agencies."

Benefits of the controlled burns include:

  • Reducing wildfire risk by removing dry vegetation and invasive plant growth
  • Supporting firefighter training and emergency preparedness
  • Promoting healthier native habitats and biodiversity
  • Improving the long-term health and resilience of park landscapes

Residents and park visitors may see smoke, fire personnel and equipment in the vicinity of the burn areas during operations. All prescribed burns will be closely supervised by trained fire professionals, and every effort will be made to ensure public safety and proper containment.

Fire personnel are working closely with Regional Parks Natural Resource staff to protect sensitive plants and wildlife.

Sacramento County Regional Parks appreciates the public's patience and cooperation as this important seasonal fire risk reduction work is completed.
