Earlier this month, approximately 2,500 middle and high school students from across California gathered in Sacramento for the annual YMCA Youth & Government Conference. The event gave young people the opportunity to step into the roles of legislators, judges and civic leaders while learning how state government works.

While students focused on debates, mock trials and policy discussions, Sacramento County’s Office of Emergency Services (OES) worked behind the scenes.

The Sacramento Medical Reserve Corps (SMRC), a volunteer program managed by Sacramento County OES, provided first aid coverage throughout the event. SMRC medical professionals — including EMTs and registered nurses — partnered with local Search and Rescue teams to staff a 24-hour, in-person first aid station and doctors and nurses were on call to provide medical advice via phone. Through this partnership, it also gave students the chance to see how local government supports the community during events. Volunteers provided medical assistance to more than 100 students during the four-day event.

“Our skilled and caring volunteer medical professionals strengthen Sacramento County departments and the community in times of emergency, staff first aid stations and provide emergency preparedness outreach in blue skies,” says Sacramento County Volunteer Program Specialist Lynn Pesley.

Large-scale events like this one require careful planning and strong coordination among partners. Sacramento County OES is proud to be one of the partners supporting and encouraging California’s future government workers and leaders.
