Sacramento County Regional Parks is inviting residents to step outside, unplug and enjoy the outdoors in celebration of National Day of Play, observed this year on Saturday, March 21.

National Day of Play is a community-driven effort that encourages people of all ages to put down their devices and spend time outside being active and connecting with others. The day highlights the importance of recreation, fresh air and shared outdoor experiences for both physical and mental well-being.

With more than 15,000 acres of parks, trails and open space throughout the region, Sacramento County Regional Parks offers countless opportunities for residents to take part. Whether it’s biking or walking along the American River Parkway, exploring nature trails, picnicking with family or simply relaxing outdoors, the park system provides spaces where the community can gather, play and recharge.

“National Day of Play is a wonderful reminder that some of the most meaningful moments happen when we step away from our screens and spend time outdoors,” said Liz Bellas, Director of Sacramento County Regional Parks. “Our parks are here for everyone—from families looking for a place to play to individuals seeking fresh air and quiet time in nature. We encourage everyone to take advantage of the incredible outdoor spaces we have right here in Sacramento County.”

Celebrating Community at Sailor Bar

As part of the celebration, community members are invited to visit Sailor Bar along the American River Parkway, where the nonprofit Friends of Sailor Bar will host a special event recognizing recent park improvements.

The gathering will celebrate the dedication of twelve new benches and seven new picnic tables installed throughout the park area. Many of the benches and tables feature commemorative inscriptions honoring community members and supporters who have contributed to the preservation and enjoyment of the parkway.

The event will include a short presentation with remarks from local elected officials, followed by an interactive nature tour highlighting the wildlife along the American River Parkway. Participants will also be able to take part in a scavenger hunt to discover the inscriptions located on the benches and tables throughout the area.

“This iconic event will celebrate the collaboration inspired by our government leaders and the community that made the American River Parkway at Sailor Bar significantly more accessible with the installation of 12 benches and 7 tables along the pathways,” said Jodi King with Friends of Sailor Bar.

Located along the scenic American River Parkway, Sailor Bar offers visitors access to trails, river views and open space that make it an ideal destination for a day outdoors.

Sacramento County Regional Parks encourages residents to celebrate National Day of Play by visiting their favorite park, exploring a new trail or simply taking time to enjoy nature with family and friends.
