Sacramento County’s Department of Child, Family and Adult Services (DCFAS) recognized Pride Month on Tuesday, June 2, by gathering staff and community partners outside the DCFAS office on Bradshaw Road to plant rainbow pinwheels and transgender pride flags in support of LGBTQ+ foster youth.

The annual event serves as a reminder of the department’s commitment to creating a safe, supportive and inclusive environment for all youth in foster care. This year, the Sacramento Gay Men’s Chorus also performed at the event. Staff members came together to show solidarity with LGBTQ+ youth and raise awareness about the unique challenges many face while in care. Research suggests that about 30% of foster youth identify as LGBTQ+, highlighting the importance of affirming and inclusive support systems.

“The annual Pinwheels for Pride event matters because it shows LGBTQ+ youth that they are worthy of safe, inclusive and supportive environments. The rainbow pinwheels and trans pride flags help shine a light on the LGBTQ+ youth in care and remind them that they are seen, valued and supported,” said Sacramento County Human Services Program Planner Heather Davis.

In addition to events like the pinwheel planting, DCFAS has specially trained LGBTQ+ Resource Specialists who provide guidance, advocacy and resources for LGBTQ+ foster youth and caregivers. The department also works to ensure youth are placed in homes where they feel respected, supported and safe being themselves.

For foster youth, having a caring and understanding home environment can make a lasting impact. Sacramento County continues to encourage community members to consider becoming Resource Parents (formerly known as foster parents), especially for teens and youth with specialized support needs.

People interested in learning more about becoming a Resource Parent can visit the DCFAS website for additional information about the process and available support services.
