Whether you're planning a day on the American River, a family picnic in one of Sacramento County's Regional Parks or a backyard barbecue, a little preparation can help ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable 4th of July.

Before You Hit the Water, Put On a Life Jacket

With the American River continuing to run fast and cold, Regional Parks is urging everyone to wear a properly fitted life jacket while enjoying the water, regardless of age or swimming ability.

County ordinance requires children under 13 to wear a life jacket at all times while on public waterways in Sacramento County. Even experienced swimmers can quickly get into trouble in cold, swift-moving water, making life jackets one of the simplest and most effective ways to prevent drowning.

Visitors can find additional water safety information on the Sacramento County Regional Parks Water Safety webpage.

Holiday Rules in Regional Parks

To help keep visitors safe during the busy holiday weekend, several seasonal rules will be in effect from July 3 – 5.

All fireworks, including so-called "safe and sane" fireworks, are prohibited in Sacramento County Regional Parks. Illegal fireworks are especially dangerous in natural areas, where they can spark devastating wildfires. Using illegal fireworks within the American River Parkway can result in fines of up to $10,000.

Open-flame fires are not permitted in Regional Parks, and barbecuing is only allowed in designated picnic areas. Smoking is also limited to developed picnic areas, asphalt surfaces, golf courses and levee tops within the American River Parkway to help reduce wildfire risk.

From July 3 – 5, alcohol is prohibited on the shores and waters of the American River within Sacramento County Regional Parks' jurisdiction, as well as at Sherman Island. The prohibition applies to both open and unopened alcoholic beverages.

Visitors should also be aware that holiday entrance fees will be $11 for standard vehicles and $18 for oversized vehicles or vehicles towing watercraft. Annual Parks Pass holders are not affected by the temporary holiday fee increase.

Keep Your Holiday Cookout Safe

Whether you're grilling at a park or at home, practicing safe food handling can help prevent foodborne illness.

Environmental Management recommends:

  • Thaw foods only in a refrigerator kept at 41 degrees or colder, under cold running water or in a microwave.
  • Keep raw meat separate from cooked foods and vegetables to avoid cross-contamination, and thoroughly wash any utensils, cutting boards or surfaces that come into contact with raw meat.
  • Keep meat refrigerated until it is ready to be cooked.
  • Use a clean food thermometer to ensure meats reach the proper internal temperature.
  • Refrigerate perishable foods within two hours to help prevent bacterial growth.

By following these simple safety tips, visitors can help ensure everyone enjoys a fun, memorable and safe 4th of July weekend.
