Fireworks and July 4: Safety First!

County Governance, Operations, Policy

As Independence Day approaches, Sacramento County is reminding residents that celebrating safely is just as important as celebrating patriotically.

With temperatures rising and fire danger increasing throughout the region, even a single careless spark can quickly ignite a dangerous fire. County officials encourage everyone planning to use fireworks to do so responsibly and only use legal "Safe and Sane" fireworks, which bear the California State Fire Marshal's seal.

Every Fourth of July, firefighters respond to preventable fires and emergency rooms treat serious injuries caused by fireworks. By making smart choices, residents can help protect their families, neighbors, first responders and our community.

Fireworks Safety Tips

If you plan to use legal Safe and Sane fireworks, remember these important safety precautions:

  • Use fireworks only on flat, level ground.
  • Keep a garden hose connected to a water source and ready to use in case of fire.
  • Have a non-combustible bucket filled with water nearby to immediately place used fireworks in after they burn out.
  • Never use fireworks near dry grass, brush or other flammable materials.
  • Never use fireworks under a canopy, covered patio, covered balcony, or beneath trees or bushes.
  • Keep a safe distance after lighting a firework.
  • Never attempt to relight or repair a firework that fails to ignite.
  • Children should never handle fireworks without close adult supervision. Unsupervised use can lead to devastating injuries and fires.

Fireworks can cause severe burns, amputations, blindness and even death when used improperly. Parents are also responsible for any property damage or injuries caused by fireworks used by their children.

Dispose of Fireworks Safely

Proper disposal is just as important as safe use.

Residents should never throw used fireworks directly into the trash. Instead:

  1. Place all used fireworks, sparklers and any "duds" into a large bucket of water.
  2. Soak them for at least 15 minutes, or preferably overnight, to ensure all embers are extinguished.
  3. Remove the fireworks from the water, allow them to drain, and seal them inside a plastic trash bag.
  4. Place the sealed bag in your garbage cart.

Proper disposal helps prevent fires inside garbage carts, collection trucks and disposal facilities, protecting sanitation workers and neighborhoods alike.

Know the Rules

In the unincorporated area of Sacramento County, Safe and Sane fireworks may only be used between 9 a.m. and 10 p.m. Using Safe and Sane fireworks outside those hours or using illegal fireworks can result in significant administrative fines.

Administrative fines include:

  • $1,000 for each illegal firework device.
  • $2,500 for each additional device within one year.
  • $5,000 for each additional device within one year.
  • $10,000 for each device used at schools, parks or within the American River Parkway.

Residents can confidentially report the illegal use or sale of fireworks by calling 311 or submitting a report through the 311 Connect App.

By celebrating responsibly, everyone can help reduce fires, prevent injuries and keep neighborhoods safe.

Let's work together to keep this Fourth of July safe, fun and memorable for all the right reasons!
