The County of Sacramento Board of Supervisors, at its March 24 meeting, unanimously approved renaming the County holiday observed on March 31. Formerly recognized as Cesar E. Chavez Day, the holiday will now be known as “Sacramento County Farm Workers Appreciation Day.”
This change formally acknowledges the essential role farm workers play in supporting the region’s economy, as well as the health and well-being of Sacramento County communities. Farm workers are a vital part of the County’s agricultural heritage and continue to contribute significantly to the food system that serves residents locally and beyond.
As part of the transition, County staff will begin meeting and conferring with Represented Employee Organizations regarding future observance of the holiday. These discussions will explore recognizing Sacramento County Farm Workers Appreciation Day on a date other than March 31 in future years.
Following those discussions, staff will return to the Board of Supervisors at a later meeting with recommended dates for the Board’s consideration.
