If you have been thinking about adding a furry family member to your home, Saturday might be the perfect day to do it.

Bradshaw Animal Shelter is once again participating in California Adopt-a-Pet Day on June 6, joining more than 150 shelters and rescue organizations across the state in a coordinated effort to help thousands of animals find loving homes.

The statewide event has become one of the biggest adoption days of the year, and its impact can be felt right here in Sacramento County.

Last year, more than 90 dogs and cats were adopted from Bradshaw Animal Shelter in a single day. Those adoptions not only changed the lives of the pets who went home, they also created much-needed space for other animals waiting to enter the shelter.

This year, shelter staff, volunteers and community partners are hoping to beat that number.

Like many shelters throughout California, Bradshaw continues to care for a large number of animals at any given time. Adoption events provide an opportunity to connect pets with families while raising awareness about the important role local shelters play in the community.

Visitors can expect to meet dogs, cats, puppies and kittens of all ages, sizes and personalities. Whether someone is looking for an energetic hiking companion, a couch cuddle buddy or a playful kitten, there is a good chance they will find a match.

Adoption fees for eligible pets will be waived for approved adopters as part of the statewide event. Even for those who are not ready to adopt, there are plenty of ways to support the shelter. Fostering, volunteering, donating supplies and simply sharing adoptable pets on social media all help animals find homes.

California Adopt-a-Pet Day is ultimately about giving animals a second chance and bringing communities together around a common goal: helping pets find the families they deserve.
