Did you know that California law requires Voter Registration & Elections (VRE) to cancel a voter’s registration under certain circumstances?
Voter Registration Cancellation forms are received by VRE and processed on a rolling basis. A voter’s registration may be canceled when we receive:
- a written, hand-signed request from the voter;
- notification from the courts that the voter has been deemed mentallyincompetent;
- government notification that the voter is presently imprisoned for a felony conviction;
- official notification that the voter is registered to vote in another jurisdiction; or
- notification the voter is deceased.
VRE receives required cancellation information from several agencies, including but not limited to:California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation
- Sacramento County Superior Court
- California Department of Public Health
- Sacramento County Public Health
- Other state and county voter registration offices
When VRE receives cancellation forms, they send the voter a pre-cancellation postcard to inform them of the cancellation (yes, even in the case of death). VRE does this so that if the cancellation has been made in error, the voter has a chance to correct the error and not find themselves left off the voter roll come election time. The voter has 15 days to respond to the postcard. VRE will then cancel or update the voter’s registration.
For more information on this and other ways VRE maintains an accurate and up-to-date voter file, visit the VRE website.
