Each May, National Foster Care Month (NFCM) shines a spotlight on the experiences of children and youth in foster care—and the critical role that supportive adults and families play in their lives. This year’s theme, “Engaging Youth,” emphasizes the importance of involving young people in decisions about their care, futures and support systems.

“This National Foster Care Month, Sacramento County reaffirms its commitment to engaging youth by ensuring every young person in our care is heard, valued and supported. Together, we strive to create safe, loving and permanent homes where all youth can thrive and build bright futures,” said Sacramento County Department of Child, Family and Adult Services Director, Shelby Boston.

There is a continual need for dedicated resource families—adults and families willing to open their homes to children in need. While homes are needed for children of all ages and backgrounds, the greatest needs are for teenagers, sibling sets and children with medical or developmental challenges. Keeping siblings together and placing children in homes near their communities helps reduce trauma and promotes stability.

Sacramento County’s Resource Family Approval (RFA) program offers a comprehensive path for individuals and families interested in becoming approved caregivers. The program provides training, support and guidance to ensure resource families are well-prepared and confident in their roles. Becoming a resource parent is a meaningful way to support not just a child, but also their family, by helping to preserve important connections and cultural ties.
