Protecting older adults from abuse, neglect, and exploitation takes a community working together. Sacramento County’s Adult Protective Services (APS) has embraced that philosophy, forging a partnership with the Sacramento Regional Family Justice Center (SRFJC) that is now being recognized on a national platform.

Bonnie Prehoda with Sacramento County APS, and Joyce Bilyeu, CEO of the Sacramento Regional Family Justice Center (SRFJC), were selected to represent Sacramento nationally to showcase the importance of collaboration. They co-presented at the 36th Annual National Adult Protective Services Association (NAPSA) Conference this September in Bellevue, Washington.

During the presentation, Bonnie and Joyce highlighted how working together creates a more coordinated response, reduces barriers to care and expands access to justice, advocacy and safety resources.

NAPSA represents a network of APS professionals from across the country. Its mission is to equip APS professionals to recognize, report and respond to the needs of older adults and adults with disabilities who are victims of abuse, neglect or exploitation, and to prevent such harm whenever possible.

By working with community partners like the SRFJC, APS is not only addressing abuse in real time but also building a stronger, more supportive network for older adults in need.
