Sacramento County has been affected by many natural hazards over the years. Sacramento County and its residents are vulnerable to a variety of hazards including floods, levee failure, drought and other severe weather events. To help address future impacts, Sacramento County is partnering with cities and numerous special districts to update the 2021 Local Hazard Mitigation Plan (LHMP).
The LHMP is a guide required by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to help reduce disaster loss from floods, droughts, severe weather and other natural hazards. The guide also helps with recovery after disaster strikes. The Plan is updated every 5 years to address the list of hazards and assessed risks that make the area vulnerable. The updated Plan will help improve the resilience of Sacramento County to weather future disasters.
Sacramento has suffered millions of dollars in damages to homes and businesses from disasters that have hit the area. In the past, the LHMP has prepared Sacramento County for incoming storms and helped residents recover from the devastation faster. Updating the LHMP will help continue this effort.
This plan allows agencies to apply for pre- and post-disaster mitigation grant funding and lessen the cost of flood insurance to the residents of Sacramento County, and the surrounding cities through FEMA’s National Flood Insurance Program.
Sacramento County is now asking the public to get involved in this effort to give their input on the 2026 plan.
Members of the community have a very important role in this process. Sacramento County is currently seeking members of the public as well as local, state, federal agencies and other stakeholders to participate in the Hazard Mitigation Planning Committee (HMPC) and public meetings for this LHMP Update. HMPC and Public Meetings will be held throughout the plan development process starting late fall 2025 through 2026. No background or expertise is required. Participation would involve the following:
- Attending 5 meetings over the next 12 months
- Reviewing and providing comments on the plan drafts
To kick off the project; the County and partnering cities will be hosting the following meetings in December. During the last LHMP process in 2020-2021, more than 400 people took part in the process. All interested stakeholders and members of the public are welcome to attend either of the HMPC or Public meetings:
