Sacramento County’s Department of Child, Family and Adult Services (DCFAS) is showing support for LGBTQ+ Foster Youth during Pride Month. As a visible symbol of support, DCFAS staff gathered on Tuesday, June 3, to plant rainbow pinwheels and transgender pride flags outside of the DCFAS office on Bradshaw Road.
DCFAS Human Services Division Manager Karen Parker, who has helped lead the event over the past two years, said that recognizing LGBTQ+ youth is essential to fostering a more inclusive environment. She said one way you can show support is simply by using your voice.
“Never think you’re not important. Your voice, your actions matter,” Karen told staff during the pinwheel planting.
Research suggests that about 30% of foster youth identify as LGBTQ+. The pinwheel planting is just one of several steps DCFAS is taking to foster a more inclusive and supportive environment. The department also has specially trained LGBTQ+ Resource Specialists who provide guidance and resources to LGBTQ+ foster youth.
For foster youth, particularly those who identify as LGBTQ+, having a loving and understanding home can have a positive impact on their life. If you are interested in making a difference in a child’s life by becoming a Resource Parent (formerly known as a foster parent), you can learn more about the process by visiting the DCFAS website.
