The California Department of Social Services (CDSS) has announced that magnetic stripe EBT cards are set to expire between now and Oct. 25, 2025. To keep your benefits safe and secure, CDSS mailed new EBT cards with chip and tap technology to all cardholders.

What You Need to Know:

  • Your benefits and PIN will automatically transfer to the new card.
  • Once you activate the new card, your old one will be turned off.

What Actions You May Take:

  • Activate the new chip-enabled card once it arrives by mail.
  • Request a new card using the ebtEDGE mobile app.
  • Call the EBT Customer Service Center at 1 (877) 328-9677 to request a new card.
  • Visit your county office if your new card hasn’t arrived. (Please note: Wait times may be long.)

What Happens If No Action Is Taken:

  • Magnetic stripe-only EBT cards can still be used until a chip and tap card has been activated or up to 180 days after the new chip and tap EBT card is issued, whichever comes first.
